Pancreas

The pancreas is composed of two distinct types of glandular tissue. The pancreatic acini of the pancreas are drained by exocrine ducts, of which various sizes form a branching system.

Embedded within the pancreatic acini tissue are clusters of endocrine cells constituting the pancreatic islets (islets of Langerhans) which are usually lighter-staining.

The little box in the adjoining image indicates where the picture below came from.

In this view, the pancreatic acini, pancreatic islets and an exocrine duct are easily seen. Be sure you can locate and identify these pancreatic elements in this PANCREAS virtual slide.
