Bone is found generally in two forms, spongy or compact. These can be distinguished grossly in the cut bone(s) on display. Compact bone is made up of cylindrical osteons (also called Haversian systems). You should be able to identify these systems and their parts in both types of bone slide available for viewing with the virtual microscope.

• Central (or Haversian) canal, at the center of each osteon.
• Lacunae, containing osteocytes, between concentric layers of bone,
• Canaliculi, connecting lacunae, and
• Perforating (or Volkmann’s) canals, transversely connecting central canals, and
• Lamellae (singular: lamella), the concentric layers of bone between lacunae
