Adipose tissue is composed largely, but not exclusively, of fat cells (adipocytes). Other than storage of fat as an energy source, adipose tissue is used for cushioning and protection of vital organs, such as the kidneys.

This section is of MESENTERY and is composed almost exclusively of fat cells (adipose tissue), with a few blood vessels here and there.

This picture of adipose tissue came from the area indicated by the rectangle in the image just above. The fat cells seem to blend together, but in fact they are individual cells, their nuclei being the most distinguishing feature.
